BASKETBALL Teachers’ College Beats Last Year’s Champions

The first round of games in the Canterbury Basketball Association's senior competition was played on Saturday in pleasant conditions. With associations a ble to nominate additional players to take part in the trials for the New Zealand team which will be selected at Queen’s Birthday week-end, much interest was taken in individual performances, but it would seem unlikely that any player substantially advanced ber claims, on the standard displayed in Saturday’s games. However, the evenness of the teams comprising this year’s senior grade was clearly apparent and the closeness of the score in all three games compensated somewhat for the lack of polished play. Teachers’ College proved its quality by narrowly defeating last reason's competition winner. Sacred Heart, whose uncertain combination gave its supporters slight cause for confidence. Technical, though tested for much of the game, proved its strength in the second spell and won comfortably against St. Nicholas. Kakatai’s victory over West B was in doubt until the last five minutes. West A had the bye. Results were:— Technical 29, St. Nicholas 21. Teachers’ College A 23, Sacred Heart 22. Kakatai A 31, West B 26. Technical v. St. Nicholas Technical established an early superiority over St. Nicholas and ran quickly to an 8-3 lead. J. Cusdin and A. Cotter in the St. Nicholas goal were unable to break through the experienced Technical defence, although St. Nicholas defence, G. Lethaby, was responsible for some lively Interceptions in the Technical goal. With play becoming faster St. Nicholas commenced to overhaul its opponent and its goal shooting showed some improvement, J. Cusdin, in particular, displaying enterprise in her handling of Technical’s strong defence. The passing of both teams was indifferent, but K. French and K. Johns, Technical’s new forward combination, shot with extreme accuracy and B. Rowe in defence, was a force always to be reckoned with. Half-time score: Technical 14, St. Nicholas 12. The second spell opened with St. Nicholas lapsing into a spate of passing errors, while Technical were able to tighten up their game and take a four goal lead. In the Technical centre P. Edmonds and J. Jackman were always prominent and as the spell progressed Technical’s hold on the game grew firmer in spite of some determined play by E. Woods and J. Blomquist for St. Nicholas. Technical’s ascendancy in the second spell was reflected In the final score. Technical 29, St. Nicholas 21.

Sacred Heart v. Teachers’ College Tenacious defence by Teachers College’s A. Stewart and J. Deaker found flaws in Sacred Heart's attack. but the poor passing by both teams affected the trend of play and the early stages of this game were scrappy with few moves passing through unchecked. In epite of good individual play by M. Murray and £ Back, Sacred Heart lacked teamwork and Teachers' College displayed increasing confidence as the spell progressed. Aided by skilful play from the centres A. Blair, L. Cosgrove and M. Curtis, Teachers’ College attacked strongly and took the lead, to make the score Teachers' College 9, Sacred Heart 6. Better play by Sacred Heart’s forwards brought rewards but by half time College was again in command and held a four goal lead.

Rearrangement of the team gave Sacred Heart more thrust in this spell and its confidence grew when P. Gallagher goaled from well out.
