TEACHERS’ LEGAL EXPENSES

Special Provision For Assistance "The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, April 30. Teachers in State schools who are acquitted of criminal charges arising out of their employment can now apply for financial assistance toward meeting legal expenses. The principal of the Seddon Memorial Technical College (Mr H. M. Scott) read to the board of managers a circular from the Department of Education which said the new provision applied from February 23, 1960. The circular said teachers might become subject to charges of assault or other serious charges because of their employment. Under the new provision assistance will be given only on the recommendation of the Crown Law Office. The memorandum said teachers acquitted of such charges might apply to the employing boards for financial assistance toward the cost of their defence. The board might make any recommendation it thought fit in forwarding the application to the Department of Education.
