Maori Culture
Sir,—Miss Rhodes is to be congratulated on her far-sighted attitude towards Maori culture. Since the pakeha settled in this land the Maori peoples have been losing their heritage and culture rapidly, and any action that can be taken to stem this trend is to be commended. Where today is to be found a Maori skilled in their magnificent art of carving? How few Maoris today retain the benefits of tribal lore and brotherhood? They have lost the best elements of their way of life and absorbed the worst of ours. The Maori youth has drifted to the cities—to a way of life unsuited to his race. The results are to be seen in the bodgie gangs, and in the large proportion of Maori boys in the Borsstals. The longer we ignore this problem and fail to attack it the worse it will become. The need for action must be realised.— Yours, etc., PRESERVE THE MAORI CULTURE. April 29, 1960.
