Price Of Coal
Sir, —“Who Pays? ’’asks how private mines can make a profit while State mines make a loss. “Observer” gives one answer and here is a second. At one Grey State mine it is almost nine o’clock by the time the miners get to their working positions. They work half an hour and stop for smoko; then work till 11.30; lunch, half an hour; and work one hour more. At 1 o’clock they knock off for the day, come out to the bath-house for a shower, and most of them are home shortly after two o’clock. The taxpayer pays up to £6 a day for the miner who works on the coal face and a. little less for truckers who put in such long hard hours.—Yours, etc., LISTENER. April 26, 1960.
