Traffic Lights

Sir, —I congratulate the traffic department on its improvement to the Colombo street-Gloucester street traffic lights by the innovation of a “time-lag” on the pedestrian . crossing to allow vehicles to turn left. This is standard practice in overseas cities where greater traffic densities are handled much more expeditiously. ‘Tedestrian’’ now writes that the “push-button” can wreck this fine improvement, when pedestrians can again straggle along the whole of the time of the green traffic light, and left-turning cars congest the roads as before. Progressive countries have removed, at busy intersections, push-buttons for pedestrians, who must wait, as motorists must wait, for the crossing to be free. Christchurch needs on all crossings “time-lag" for pedestrians, left turn on red if traffic permits, no dead “all red” periods (that’s what amber is for), and instantaneous use of green if the opposite crossing is not being used.—Yours, etc., W. J. THOMPSON. April 11, 1960.
