BASES IN CYPRUS
Compromise Offered
NICOSIA, April 11. The British Colonial Undersecretary, Mr Julian Amery, is expected to hold a decisive meeting with Cypriot leaders in Nicosia today as the result of an offer by Archbishop Makarios on the vexed British bases issue. The Archbishop, President-elect of the projected Cyprus republic, has offered Britain 93 square miles for sovereign British bases in the island after it becomes independent, sources close to him said yesterday. Britain’s original demand was for 120 square miles. Instead, the Archbishop offered first 36 then 80. Failure to reach agreement on the issue has caused indefinite postponement of Cypriot independence; which should have been established onFebruary 19. The Archbishop’s offer is understood to have been made on Friday. Mr Amery has so far had 31 meetings with the Archbishop and the Turkish Cypriot Vice-Presi-dent-elect, Dr. Fadil Kutchuk.
