1959 SHIPPING STATISTICS

Decrease On 1958 Figures

During 1959, only 883 vessels entered New Zealand ports direct from overseas, compared with 929 in the previous year. These vessels made a total of 2875 calls at various ports while on the New Zealand coast, a decrease on the number of calls (2969) during 1958.

Entrances of coastal vessels also decreased in 1959, the number being 10.999, compared with 12,752 for the previous year. Arrivals of vessels direct from overseas are concentrated on the ports of Auckland, Wellington and Lyttelton, but the ports of final departure from New Zealand are more widely distributed, with Auckland, Tauranga, and Wellington recording the greatest number of departures during 1959. During 1959, 17.7 million net tons of shipping entered New Zealand ports, a decrease of 6 per cent, on the net tonnage of arrivals of both overseas and coastal vessels during 1958.
