NEVER-ENDING TASK
Mowing On Auckland
’ Motorway
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 19. A man whose work is ready to be started again as .soon as it is finished may be seen almost any day of the week along the Southern motorway. He is Mr R. Waldron, employed by the Ministry of Works to cut the middle strip of grass along the motorway. The strip of grass, about eight miles long, takes about five days to cut When Mr Waldron comes to the end he goes back to where he started to begin once again. Mr Waldron likes a change at the end of the week, so on Saturday mornings he cuts the lawn at his home in Royal Oak. Mr Waldron, who was told to work in the open air for health reasons, has a lonely job. but he likes it. “It's all right if you don’t mind being on your own most of the time.” he said. “Sometimes I see the men who look after the outside edges, then we have a picnic lunch together." Did cars going by just a few feet away worry him? “If they come a bit close I just step back quickly and leave the mower where it is.’’
He put the mower into gear and went off to continue his weekly walk of more than 40 miles.
Child Injured.— Wendy Lawrence, of 64 Barton street, suffered facial injuries and shock when she felf from a bicycle in Centaurus road, just east of Rapakl road, yesterday afternoon. She was taken by a St John ambulance to the Christchurch Hospital and was admitted.
