DEFENCES OF INDIA
“Reconditioning” To Face China
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) NEW DELHI. April 10. The Indian Defence Minister, Mr V.. K. Khrishna Menon, told a cheering House of the People yesterday that the defence of India was being reconditioned to meet any eventuality on the Chinese-Indian border. The defence forces had been augmented and their defensive power was now greater than ever before.
Mr Menon said whatever the outcome of the forthcoming talks between the Prime Ministers of India and China, the fact remained that the northern frontier had become and would certainly have to be looked after “in our time.”
He told the House he did not take an alarmist view of the border situation, but a country engaged in a defence, war always stood the chance of initial reverses and the public should be prepared to understand this. The Indian Air Force would soon be equipped with supersonic squadrons and in two years destroyers would be built in the new dockyards for the .Indian Navy, he said. The Government was seriously considering the induction of 500.000 people ip to the territorial army.
The House voted Defence Ministry demands totalling 3100 million rupee (£232 million). Mr Menon said he was likely to ask for more later this year.
