An Economic Industry?
Sir,—“How many industries are making uneconomic demands on our scarce resources of labour and money?” You ask. A leading representative of the Staffordshire pottery manufacture and design industry questions our low degree of originality in copying their products. Like plagiarism in literature or music, may it not involve moral, if not financial loss to the offenders? What of the degradation of cultural assets, of consumer choice, and purchasing power? Are these no less economic matters to be considered in the prohibition of certain imports affecting aesthetics and lowering standards of production? Certain type of overseas, factories, through their siting, construction, and capacity, are better able to produce satisfactory goods. Is it economy, to limit the consumer range to inferior purchase values? Is degraded craftsmanship economic?—Yours, etc.. RAISING STANDARDS. March 25, 1960.
