ELLIOTT REFUSES INVITATION

Coach Finds Decision Pleasing

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 27.

The world’s fastest miler, H. Elliott, has declined an Auckland invitation to race on April 2 against M. Halberg, and his coach, Mr P. Cerutty is glad of it.

Mr Cerutty said in Auckland: “I cannot really consider Halberg in my group or camp of athletes so for that reason I’m pleased Elliott will not come over to face the possibility, even probability, of being beaten.” Elliott has not been in his best form since he lost weight and. for family reasons, lost the opportunity to train, Mr Cerutty said. “In view of the excellent form of Halberg it’s as well for Elliott’s reputation that he has decided against coming. “Had he not been upset by those family complications, I know he would have loved to come.”

The Auckland Amateur Athletic Centre, in conjunction with the Auckland Easter Show Committee, had planned to mntch Halberg and Elliott at a spstrial meeting at the Show Grounds next Saturday. The centre is now expected to seek another top-flight Australian athlete to feature in a special hour-long athletic meeting at the Show Grounds.
