ATHLETICS THREE RECORDS BY R. BALL AT UNIVERSITY TITLES

R. Ball, the national javelin champion, broke three records at the University of Canterbury athletic championships at Rugby Park on Saturday. Ball, making his first appearance at Rugby Park since his return from Australia with the New Zealand men’s athletic team, set new marks in the shot put, the javelin, and the

discus. Five records were broken altogether, but Ball’s performances dominated the meeting and did much to give Agriculture second place, with 34 points, in the interfaculty contest. R. Stevens ran a fine three miles on a dead track to break his own record of 14min 42.25ec by 6.4 sec. The race was a contest between J. Macdonald, who had earlier won the 880 yards, and Stevens, but Stevens went away in the last two laps to win by almost lOsec. Miss A. MacDonald won the womens’ 75 yards, 100 yards, 220 yards, 80 metres hurdles and long jump. Her time of 11.5 sec in the 100 yards equalled the record of Miss J. Nixon, set three years ago. The fifth record was broken in the pole vault when A. Brooks cleared lift 3}in, beating his own record by 3|in. There was keen competition in the men’s sprints. J. Whitehead, in his first year as a senior, beat R. Burgess and A. Steel in the 100 yards in the good time of lO.lsec, and in the 220 yards he beat Steel by .lsec in 22.65ec. These were very good runs on the slow track.

B. Kerr, who has had little competition for several weeks because of a leg injury, ran a welljudged 440 yards and beat the promising D. Mackenzie by three yards in 50.7 sec. Ball used his new aluminium javelin and threw a distance of 189 ft 9in, beating his own record by 3ft 6 jin. His 44ft 7jin in the shot put bettered his own mark by 2in, and his winning throw in the discus beat his own record of 144 ft 2in by Ift 10iin. Points in the inter-faculty contest were: Arts 77, Agriculture 34. Engineering 18, Fine Arts 16, Commerce 15, Science 8, Law 2. In the inter-club events Miss V. Sloper put the shot 53ft 10in, which was only 7in short of her national record.
