WELFARE STATE PRAISED
Comment By Israeli Administrator (New Zealand Press’ Association) WELLINGTON, March 23. “All one can say about the Welfare State is that it works; you have’ got it,” said the Hon. Edwin Samuel, the principal of the Israeli School of Public Administration and son of the Liberal statesman (Viscount Samuel) today. He said he was impressed by the high living standard everybody enjoyed, though the 40-hour week might mean discomofort for some. In encouraging its tourist industry New Zealand might have to ease up on its very melastic hotel meal hours. “It will not be easy to persuade people to come to New Zealand if they cannot get food at odd hours,” he said. There was vitality in New Zealand’s welfare state, he continued. People were continually in the process of adjustment and
one did not sense the dead hand of routine. Mr Samuel said he took New Zealand, Sweden, and Great Britain as prototype welfare states and India and Israel as would-be welfare states. The great difference between New Zealand and Israel was that, though both tried to divide the cake equally, New Zealand’s cake was four times as large, he said.
