Picaroon Wins Second Awapuni Gold Cup

-The Press' Special Service

WELLINGTON, March 13. Rain which set in overnight and persisted during the day made the Awapuni track toft and cutting out, conditions which were made for Picaroon, Fondu and Golden Candidate, winners of the principal events on the concluding day of the Manawatn autumn meeting.

Picaroon repeated his success of 12 months ago in the Awapuni Gold Cup, the first to achieve this feat since Silver Ring in 1934 and 1935. His win also added to the remarkable record of the Hastings jockey, J. T. Anderson, in the event He has ridden the last three winners. Fondu added to his good record on the track when he won the Tamatete Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double. Although it was his first race since December he paraded hard in condition. He was not far from the pace and crew away for an easy win. This double was comnleted by Golden Candidate in the Longbum Handicap. He began brilliantly and was not headed. The return for £1 was £52 ss.

The weather affected the attendance and the on-course totalisator handled £61,828 (including £13,394 on doubles) compared with £73,832 on the corresponding day last year, a decrease of £12,004. The total for the meeting was £135,283, against £148.504 10s last year, a decrease of £13,221 10s.

After enjoying a perfect trail Fondu won the Tamatete Handicap easily. Grand Bank lost ground at the start. Koda Khan took up the pacemaking from Ellen’s Pride, Fondu, Ruve, Solepic. Salam, Wakefield. Goudvink. Warwick, Kilroy and Grand Bank.

Koda Khan retained his advantage at the straight entrance and was immediately challenged by Fondu and Ruve, with Saless, Solepic and Goudvink handy. Fondu soon got the upper hand and won by three lengths from Koda Khan, which was a similar distance in front of Ruve.

Saless was a close fourth, then SfJP* Warwick, Scimitar, Solepic, Kilroy, Ellen's Pride, Goudvink, Wakefield and Grand Bank. Results:—
