CHICKEN CHEAPER IN BRITAIN

While red meat prices in Britain are rising, the price of chickens is falling—a phenomenon that would have been unimaginable 10 years ago, says “The Times,” discussing the “remarkable” rise of the new broiler (spring chicken) industry.

Six years ago broiler production was five million a year. In 1959 it was 75 million and this year it is expected to reach 100 imllion. Already chicken compares favourably in price with chops and steak. In a few years it could be competing with cheaper cuts, as it is in the United States.

Stanhill.—Stanhill Consolidated, Ltd., hotel and investment group, has raised its interim dividend from 64 per cent, to 7J per cent. Dividend is payable on April 26 and maintains the company’s annual 15 per cent, rate, which last year, was paid in Irregular amounts. Trading results for the six months to January 31 increased over the corresponding previous period, directors say. Profit also increased. —N.G.P-A., Melbourne, March 11.
