U.K. SMALL SEEDS

London Market Firm

Although an improved retail demand for small seeds has been reported from parts of the United Kindom, a spell of warmer and drier weather is needed to stimulate the demand for spring sowing. The London Office of the Bank of New Zealand in its market review reports that the New Zealand market has been firm, but there is a wide difference between New Zealand sellers and British merchants, who are chiefly concerned with reducing stocks. There has been more inquiry and some buying of New Zealand white clover mother seed on spot in London, where supplies are small. Prices have been below those quoted from New Zealand for shipment. New Zealand perennial ryegrass mother seed for prompt shipment has been offered at 157 s 6d c.i-f., with new crop for forward shipment at 1455. First grade Irish is quoted at 145 s f.0.b., Belfast and Irish Italian at 152 s 6d f.o.b. There has been some demand for early shipment of short rotation ryegrass.

English broad red clover, 1559 crop, of good colour and analysis is obtained at 215 s to 220 s a cwt ex London warehouse.

The last month has seen a sharp decline in prices of New Zealand maple peas, due to selling pressure from the Dominion at a time when United Kingdom buyers have ample supplies. New Zealand sellers have continued to offer new crop peas at declining prices, No. 1 grade being reduced to 47s a cwt c.i.f., compared with 53s a month ago. It is thought in London that the selling pressure may be due to growers selling on their own account and not through merchants. Values have reached their lowest point for some years, and there is still a feeling of uncertainty about the future course of the market.
