Cycling NEW FIVE-MILE RECORD
Olympic Trials In Invercargill
(New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, March 13.
One New Zealand record was broken when Olympic trials were held by the Invercargill Amateur Cycling Club on the Kew Bowl on Saturday. . „ . A. Walsh (Auckland), the New Zealand senior sprint champion, and the New Zealand 10-mile recordholder, led a strong field home in the five-mile race, which was run in the New Zealand record time of lOmin 27.65ec. The old record was lOmin 28.8 sec. held by A. Larkins (Otago), who finished fourth, less than a length away. W. Dalton (Invercargill), second, G. Ulmer (Wellington) third. Walsh and Larkins flashed across the line in a blanket finish. The only other riders to complete the course, J. Holloway (Invercargill) and D. Robinson (Wellington), were close up. The North Island team of A. Walsh, D. Robinson, G. Wright (Wellington), and G. Ulmer narrowly beat the South Island in an Italian pursuit run over four laps. South took the lead in the first lap, but North gradually drew away, and it was left to Dalton (South) and Walsh (North) to fight out the final lap. Walsh led Dalton by about three lengths beginning the final lap, and held on to win. The North Island team’s time was Imln 31.2 sec. G. Wright (Wellington), the New Zealand junior five-mile champion, eliminated Walsh in the 500 metres sprint. Dalton beat Ulmer in the other semi-final, and beat Wright in the final in 13.5 sec.
