Young Girl Drowned At Beach

(New Zealand Press Association/ NEW PLYMOUTH, March 13.

A six-year-old girl, Susan Joy Burkitt, a daughter of Mr and Mrs R. J. Burkitt, of 3 Rogan street, New Plymouth, was drowned at Oakura Beach today. The girl was paddling in shallow water 400 yards east of the area patrolled by the New Plymouth Swimming. and Old Boys’ Surf Club when her absence was noted. She was found by her father about 20 minutes later, and artificial respiration was applied unsuccessfully.

Cyclist Injured.— John Blackaby, of 168 Blenheim road, suffered minor head and arm injuries in a collision between his bicycle and a car in Riccarton road shortly after 10 am. on Saturday. He was taken by taxi to the Christchurch Hospital and was sent home after treatment at the casualty department.
