DEEP SPACE PROBES

Pioneer V May Be Fifth

NEW YORK, March 12. Pioneer V will become the second completely successful United States space probe if it accomplishes the orbit planned for it. The Soviet Union, making the moon her primary target, has fired three space and moon probes. The Soviet Union began with Lunik I, or Mechta, on January 2, 1959. This 7961 b probe shot past the moon and went into orbit around the sun. The United States followed on March 3. 1959, with the 131 b Pioneer IV, which also went into orbit around the sun. It was the first Pioneer series to attain its objectives, the others .ailing far short of their goals. The Russians hit the moon with Lunik 11, an 8581 b shot fired on September 12, 1959. On October 4. 1959. they fired Lunik 111, a probe which circled behind the moon, photographed it for the first tiihe, and transmitted the pictures back to earth. Lunik 111 then became a satellite of earth.
