Cycling N.Z. TITLES AT AUCKLAND
Canterbury Men In Fair Form (Neto Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 4. Conditions were perfect at the second session of the New Zealand amateur cycling championships at Auckland this evening, Canterbury riders had some successes. In the senior 500 metre sprint G. Hill met questionable tactics by C. M. Simpson (Auckland), but he sprinted magnificently 10l gain the decision after Simpson had kept him at the back to within 30 yards of the line. T. Cameron was holding A. J. Walsh (Auckland) at the back round the bottom banking, but on entering the back straight, Walsh made a brilliant jump to drop inside Cameron and leave him six lengths behind. Walsh then went away to win by eight lengths. Cameron was eliminated in the repechage by R. Thomson (.Wellington).
J. Beere brilliantly switched D. Smith (Wellington) nearing the 220 yard mark to gain a good lead, but failed to hold this advantage and was beaten by a length. Beere was also eliminated in the repechage. T. Weir made a great effort over the last 50 yards against the Auckland champion, L. D. Byers, but lost by half a length. Weir then came back into the eighthfinal by winning his repechage. The Canterbury junior, B. Hazeldine trailed D. Robinson (Wellington) until 30 yards from the line, when he made a fine jump to win by a length. Three in Quarter-finals
Canterbury had three riders, Hill, Weir and Hazeldine, to contest the eighth-finals. They were all successful and will now contest the quarter-finals tomorrow. Hazeldine will have his most testing ride when he meets Wi Johnston, the present titleholder. Canterbury also had three riders to contest the junior eighth-finals, these being W. Thorpe, K. Dwyer, and D. Wilson. Wilson was the only Canterbury rider to survive this round. in the 4000 metres individual pursuit R. Harrison was most disappointing. After recording smin 18.6 sec to win the Canterbury title, the best he could do this evening was smin 30.2 sec. The Canterbury team qualified in the 4000 metres teams’ pursuit, and will now race in the semifinal tomorrow. Abbreviations in the following results are:—
