ROAD TUNNEL AND HARBOUR

Co-operation In Projects

The Lyttelton Harbour Board’s extension works were well up to schedule and, in the absence of any unforseen circumstances, should be completed by 1964, said Mr A. L. Burk, secretary-manager of the board yesterday. He had been asked about the progress of the work in relation to the tunnel road project. Mr Burk said this information was given to the secretary of the Local Authority Loans Board when be conferred with harbour board and Road Tunnel Authority representatives last year. At this meeting, both the harbour board and tunnel representatives had emphasised that the best results from the harbour board’s £3.5 million investment in extension works could not be obtained if the road tunnel was delayed, Mr Burk added. He was commenting on the emphasis by the M-inister of Finance (Mr Nordmeyer) this week on the desirability of completing both works at the same time.

There had always been the greatest co-operation between the harbour board and the tunnel authority, Mr Burk concluded.
