TRAVEL FILM FESTIVAL

Varied Programme Presented Five colour films from Australia, Indonesia, Malaya and the South Pacific —the second programme of the travel film festival being presented this week by the Christchurch Film Society for the Pacific Area Travel Association conference —were shown in the Civic Theatre last night. “The Sunshine State,” a documentary made for the Queensland Government Tourist Bureau was notable for its excellent shots of undersea life on the Barrier Reef. “An American Looks at Bali” showed vividly that the famous and ancient art and culture of the Balinese are still being preserved. A Malayan Department of Tourism film, “Malacca Then and Now,” contrasted the mixture of cultures which have influenced the modern character of this old world port of the Orient. “The Trail of Captain Cook” showed modern methods of visiting the places discovered by Captain Cook: Hawaii, Tahiti, Tonga, Fiji, New Zealand and Australia. It was produced by Mr Carl Dudley, of Hollywood, who was in the audience last evening. “Power in the Mountains” produced by the Tasmanian Government Film Unit showed recent hydro-electric developments in Tasmania.
