SURGERY AT CASHMERE
Possible Transfer From Burwood Burwood Hospital may lose its general surgery provision. North Canterbury Hospital Board members yesterday considered this possibility with a view to activating the brand-new, but idle, facilities at Princess Margaret Hospital. Mr V. J; Corbett raised the subject by asking if some transfer from Burwood might be made to enable Princess Margaret Hospital, to have general surgery provision and to cut down the waiting list. The medical superintendent-in-chief (Dr. T. Morten) said that there was a shortage of senior nurses at Burwood and added that it might be necessary "to take surgery from Burwood.’’ The Cashmere subsidiary committee reported it had given consideration to the opening of a surgical ward at Princess Margaret Hospital "at the earliest opportunity.” It was reported that the lady superintendent felt it would be possible to open "one surgical ward not later than March 28 . . . a second ward in July and a third, if staff is available, in October.” It was gratifying that a definite date had been fixed the chairman (Dr. L. C. L. Averill) commented. The subject was referred to the Institutions committee for a report.
