ADDINGTON MARKET Best Of Older Ewes Hold Their Values

The emphasis was on the better class sheep in good condition and sound in the mouth and feet in the old ewe section at Addington market, yesterday. These sheep sold at fully up to late rates under relatively free competition, but average and inferior sheep eased by 3s and in cases more, moving towards the lower level of values set for older sheep at the Tinwald fair on Tuesday. However, there was still a market for most sheep. Better class two-tooth ewes met a strong sale and were from par to a shade dearer. Average and inferior sheep were not so easy to sell and were from par to a shade easier. For a handful of wethers values showed no significant variation. Lambs met a surprisingly good sale at values little different from last week.

The yarding totalled 23,321 head compared with 19,690 last week and was made up of 5597 store lambs. 3628 two-tooth ewes. 13,302 older ewes and 704 wethers. STORE LAMBS Store lambs sold soundly and competition was well sustained throughout the sale. Basic levels of values showed little change and were fully firm on last week’s rates. The entry was again relatively small, with 5597 head coming forward, compared with 5529 last week. Quality varied, with very few top lambs on offer, and the bulk of the entry was made up of good quality carry-over sorts. There were fewer small and nondescript lines. The sale opened on a good, firm note, and there was a surprisingly keen demand for the average quality lines, which followed the trend set at last week’s sale. Taken all over, it was a satisfactory sale. Several pens of shorn wether lambs had a good sale at sound prices, with the top pen of 91 Romneys from H. H. Deans (Auchenflower) selling at 32s 6d. Best shorn lambs realised from 26s to 32s 6d, with average from 21s 6d to 24s 6d.’ A sound demand existed for the few pens of good ewe lambs at current rates, and other classes met a good inquiry at prices comparable with those for wether lambs of equivalent quality. A line of 300 Romneys from G. Flower (Glentunnel) made from 37s 6d to 435, and D. Inkson (West Eyreton) sold halfbreds at up to 36s 6d. Good ewe lambs realised from 36s 6d to 435, with average at 32s to 34s 6d, plain at 20s to 255, and others from 14s to 17s.

The wether lamb market was topped by K. P. F. Neill (Little River), with 53 Border LeicesterRomney cross selling at 38s 6d, and F. Radford (Motukarara) had a sale of Down cross at 38s. T. Bell (Governors Bay) sold Down cross at 37s for a pen of 26. and the same type gained 36s 6d for R. M. Baxter (Darfield).

For fine wool wether lambs, the top price of 34s 6d was shared by J. F. Cracroft Wilson (Cashmere) and the Glens of Tekoa (Culverden) with halfbreds. The Glens of Tekoa forwarded a line of 780 wether lambs which made the top price for 116; 300 sold at 31s, 176 made 27s 6d, and the balance gained 22s 6d. The best Down cross lambs sold to 38s, with Border Leicester cross wether lambs to 38s 6d. Romneys to 35s 6d, and fine-wools to 34s 6d. The best of the wether lambs offered made from 36s to 38s 6d, with good at 28s to 35s 6d, average at 19s to 275, and others from 10s 6d to 17s 6d. Sales Included:—

For these top sheep inquiry was sound «L«L at< l s at as good 38 last week to a shade better, although hardly up to the extremely good rates paid for young ewes at Amberley and Tinwald in the last week. The sale, however, had a rather different flavour when it came to the average and smaller fine wool sheep of which there was a substantial offering. These were not so easy selling and values tended to be from par to a little easier. Some of these sheep did not reach values in accord with vendors’ ideas and were passed in at auction. For the best of a small selection of Romneys values made from 55s to 645, with average to good at 39s to 48s. In the case of the fine wool two-tooths the best sold at 58s to 665. average 40s to 48s, small and inferior 33s to 38s, and others down to 14s. Smaill (Hororata) received up to 65s 6d for the tops of 280 Corriedales, and 138 Corriedales from A. T. Black (Rockend) were sold for 60s. While there was a larger representationi of average to Inferior ewes, there was also a fair sprinkling of farmers' sheep of both fine wool and R Cmce y agrdn S ’maln interest was In the better class lines of big, wellgrown sheep, sound in mouth ana feet For these there was a sound sale at rates fully up to late quotations, but for average and inferior sheep the market tended to decline, and these sheep were probably Js or more cheaper than last week and were approachng the sharply lower level of values set at the Tinwald fair on Tuesday. However, there was a marked difference between Addington and Tinwald in that yesterday there was still a market for the great majority—a characteristic of Addington that never ceases to surprise obesrvers. The gallery was. however, never very large, and towards the close ft dwindled to the stage where only the stock agents were left. , . Indicative of the fairly modest values now ruling, a large part of yesterday's offering sold between about 16a and 245, with only a sprinkling of top sheep making between 30s and 40s. Fine wool sheep predominated in the offering of the older ewes and for the best of these values ranged from 34s to 445, with good 22s to 28s, average 16s to 21s, and others at 9s to 15s. For the pick of the Romneys values ranged from 30s to 365, with good 25s to 30s, average 17s to 245, and others 6s to 15s. Annual draft four-year-old Romneys, which had been shorn in August, from L. J. Murray and Sons (Wharanui), topped this section of the sale at 44s 6d, Logan Bros. (Gore) received 36s for 64 five-year-old Romneys from G. B. and E. G. Wilson (Gore), and for 80 five-year Romney cross from J. F. Cracroft Wilson (Cashmere). Annual draft halfbreds from G. H. Parsons and Son (Woodside) brought up to 445, and halfbreds from the same vendors under the name Mount Victoria, fetched 40s. For 330 four-year Corriedales, J. S. Scott (Mount Pleasant) realised 41s.
