MINE FIRE DISASTER
Faint Hope For Men (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11.30 p.m. BERLIN, February 24. There is a faint hope that 100 miners trapped behind a fire 1100 ft below the surface at Zwickau, in Saxony, may still be alive. The East Berlin radio said it was possible that there was air beyond the fire in the mine and that some of the men at least might be alive. Rescue teams from all over East Germany worked through the night to reach the men, reported the East German news agency, A.D.N. “The intense heat restricted each team to twohour shifts. So far 21 bodies had been recovered and 51 miners rescued. The East German Premier, Mr Otto Grotewohl, will visit the mine today. First news of the disaster was given on Monday night by A.D.N., which said there had been an explosion and fire as the morning shift was going on duty. Since then rescue workers in smoke masks have been trying to fight a way through the flames and fumes.
