City Programme Arranged
While delegates attend sessions of the Pacific Area Travel Association’s ninth annual conference, thier wives will be entertained by a women’s social committee, headed by Mrs A. S. Bailey. The visitors will be taken to Akaroa, entertained by representatives of women’s organisations, and will see the Canterbury Museum and the Canterbury Horticultural Society’s summer show. The women’s social programme, which includes official functions arranged for all delegates, begins with a visit to the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, after which the New Zealand Government reception will be held at the Winter Garden in the evening. On Sunday, the visitors will be taken for aerial sightseeing tours of the South Island in the morning and for bus tours round Christchurch and its environs in the afternoon. After the official opening of the conference by the Prime Minister (Mr Nash) on Monday morning, delegates and their wives will be guests at the opening of the air terminal building at the Christchurch airport. In the afternoon they will hear the Governor-General (Viscount Cobham) address the conference. Later they will be entertained at a garden party in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. Monday evening is set aside for the premiere screening of the P.A.T.A. film festival at the Regent Theatre. Womenfolk will be taken to Akaroa for lunch on Tuesday, and will call at the “Kinloch” homestead on their way back to Christchurch. Dinner and . Dance A cocktail party, followed by dinner and dancing, will be held at the Addington Trotting Club’s kiosk in the evening. Representatives of Christchurch womens’ organisations will entertain delegates’ wives at the Winter Garden on Wednesday morning. In the afternoon the visitors will have lunch at Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, as part of their country visit. Private hospitality has been arranged for Wednesday evening. Visits to the Canterbury Museum, with a tour of the new colonial gallery, and to the summer show of the Canterbury Horticultural Society at King Edward Barracks have been arranged for Thursday and Friday. The conference will close on Friday afternoon. In the evening a cocktail party will be held for the visitors at the Addington Trotting Club, after which there will be a farewell dinner and Maori entertainment. Assisting Mrs Bailey to entertain the women visitors are Mesdames M. Gray, G. Manning, W. G. Scannell, M. Simes and R. A Young and Miss Mary McLean.'
