Whittle To Be Steward

MELBOURNE, February 15. A prominent Melbourne jockey. Les Whittle, was today appointed a trainee stipendiary steward by the Victoria Racing Club, He will relinquish his jockey’s licence, which he has held since 1929. Whittle made up his mind at the week-end to retire, but went to Flemington today for “just one more ride on the best horse I have ever ridden—Tulloch ” Other champions Whittle rode in track work were Comic Court, Redcraze, Rising Fast. Russia, Delta, Wodalla and Toparoa. For years he has been regarded as one of the best judges in Australia of a horse’s form, and he rode more top-class horses in training than any other Victorian jockey.
