France will test her first nuclear bomb during the last 10 days of February, it was unofficially reported today. A spokesman of the French Defence Ministry said no press representative would be allowed to witness the explosion, but information and pictures would be made available as soon as possible after the explosion. Today France began exercises connected with the flying ban which will be enforced over the desert when the bomb is tested. No details of the exercises were given.
In Cairo today, the United Arab Republic's Director of Civil Defence (Mr Abdel Hamidabou Zeid) said the Republic had taken the necessary measures to protect its population from possible fallout from the French test. Mr Zeid, in a statement to the semi-official Middle East News Agency, said his department would be installing several stations in Cairo and Alexandria and along the U.A.R. borders to detect fallout.
