MONTE CARLO RALLY
Dutch Driver Killed
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, January 19.
There has already been a fatality in the 29th Monte Carlo rally, which enters its second day today. J. Van Nieuwenhuyzen, a Dutchman who started from Oslo, was killed early this morning when his car collided with a lorry about a mile north of Rabbalshede, a village in Western Sweden.
His crew-made, A. Moggre (Holland), was seriously injured. At dawn today, crews from seven of the nine starting points had set out on the 2200-mile journey to Monte Carlo in the world’s toughest test of car and driver. Drivers from Lisbon, Frankfurt and the Hague started during the night, following those from Oslo, Athens, Warsaw and Glasgow, who began yesterday. Setting out later this morning were the crews from the remaining two starting points—first Rome, then Paris.
