Record Yearling Sales Had 852 Gns. Average

(From Out Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, January 20. The thirty-fourth National Sale of Yearlings ended at Trentham today and goes on record as easily the best ever in New Zealand. The average for 269 yearlings sold this year is 852 guineas, which is 103gns higher than the previous best. The previous best average of 749gns was recorded in 1958 when 269 were sold for 201,660gn5. Of the aggregate of 229,295gns this year 107,430 gns was received today for 136 yearlings, three more than the number to change hands yesterday. Last year’s average was 631gns, the aggregate being 162,990gn5.

This year’s sale will be memorable for the heavy support o£ Australian racing men, whose interest has been developed to a high level through the outstanding run of successes by New Zealand horses, specially the stayers, in their countryAustralians bought 80 of the 136 yearlings sold today and paid 70,870gns for them. Altogether they have bought 149 this year for 146.295gn5. Last year they spent 96,625gn5. Seventy-five youngsters brought four-figure prices this year and Australians bought 53 of them. The Sydney trainer T. J. Smith made an outstanding individual contribution towards the success of the sale by spending 22,500gns on 12 yearlings for clients of his stable. Today Smith bought five for 7400gns and made only one purchase for less than four figures. The seven yearlings he bought on the firs: day were all at fourfigure prices. R. Roden was the most active Australian buyer today. This Sydney trainer spent 8250gns for eight lots and his total for the two days was 13 for an aggregate of 13,150gn5. Gabador Colt Brings 3250gns Top price today was 3250gns paid by the Melbourne trainer J. Mulcahy for a brown colt by Gabador from Eastern Charm offered on account of Mr W. Fisher’s Ra Ora Stud. Mulcahy was acting on behalf of Mr A Griffiths, of Melbourne, ■who is also the owner of the Marco Polo ll—Cuban Fox colt which topped this year’s sale at 5000gns. The Gabador colt bought for Mr Griffiths today is a brother to French Charm, a very good winner in Australia, and a half-brother to Magic Carpet, a very sucessful campaigner for Mr J. H. Grigg in New Zealand and Australia-

Dalray is closely related to today’s top lot.

Second highest price today was 3200gns offered by the Sydney trainer M. Anderson for a bay colt by Marco Polo II from the Paper Boy mare Misprint. This colt was offered towards the end of a dragging sale and might have been the best for the two days had he been better placed in the catalogue. Misprint won seven races including the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie. Milford, which did his racing in Australia was another very good winner, and Glenlee, Glenkay and Kirklea have improved a very good family record in New Zealand. A bay colt by Gabador from Centeno, the first in the draft from Ra Ora, brought 2700gns, that making him the third most valuable youngster offered. He will also go to Australia, and probably to Melbourne to be trained for a client of A. Armanasco’s stable.

Fourth best price today was paid by a New Zealander, Mr R. Vincent, a Matamata farmer and an owner-trainer. Mr Vincent paid 2600gns for a chestnut colt by Resurgent from Stratocruiser bred by Miss J. Butland and Mrs M. Grogan and reared at the Blanford Lodge Stud at Matamata.

This colt is a brother to Lady Cortauldi, winner of eight races in Australia and a close relation to Ark Royal. Mr G. H. Grigg’s Parchases

Mr G. H. Grigg, president of the New Zealand Racing Conference and chairman of the Canterbury Jockey Club, was the only South Islander to go to four figures to buy any of the yearlings sold today. Mr Grigg, a patron of I. McClure’s Riccarton stable, paid llOOgns for a chestnut colt by Jekyll from Auldana offered on account of the Santis Lodge Stud at Matangi. Mr Grigg’s colt is a half-brother to the fast sprinter Dhofar, a winner from the Riccarton stable of F. A. Roberts before she was sold to South Australia where she has had a fair amount of success as a sprinter. The second best price paid by a South Islander was 900gns paid by Mr H. D. Greenwood, of Amberley, for a brown colt by Clarification from the Ninth Duke mare Spring Rain, which left Spring Fair and Raining, the unraced dam of Fair Filou. Mr H. C. Akhill, an Indian who lives in Fiji, today paid 2050gns for a Count Rendered-Cleveland colt. This grandson of the top class stayer Swanee will do his racing in Australia where he will be trained by J. Denham. On account Mr H. R. Carter, Waharoa: Gr or br c Rejoicing ll—Finasia: H. A.
