MEMBERSHIP OF U.N.
Application By
Kamerun
NEW YORK January 20 Kamerun. the world’s newest State, has formally applied for membership of the United Nations The application was contained in a cable yesterday to the United Nations SecretaryGeneral (Mr Hammarskjold) from the Prime Minister of Kamerun (Mr Ahmadou Ahidjo) France administered Kamerun under the United Nations trusteeship system until the West African territory attained nationhood on January 1. France, a permanent member of the Security Council, was expected to ask for an early Security Council meeting to endorse the membership application.
The council’s recommendation will probably be acted on at the opening session of the next General Assembly—which is not due before September unless the world forum is convened earlier for an emergency Kamerun's sovereignty has been recognised by many nations including the great Powers but the internal situation in the new nation has caused some States including Ghana to withhold recognition. An anti-Government party the Union of the Kamerun People, tried in vain a year ago to have the United Nations delay cancellation of the trust agreement pending new elections. Violent clashes marked Kamerun’s independence day, for which world diplomats, including Mr Hammarskjold, were present Kamerun is one of at least five
new States expected to be admitted to the United Nations this year. The others are Somalia, Togo, Cyprus and Nigeria.
