SCENIC AREA THREATENED
Forest Fire At
Ngaruru (New Zealand Press Association) BLENHEIM, January 19. High winds have so far defeated the efforts of fire-fighters to quell a fire which is threatening a 400-acre scenic reserve at Ngaruru, in Tory Channel. As darkness drew on this evening a weary squad, comprising officers of the Forest Service and the Land and Survey Departent, reinforced by settlers and holidaymakers, was withdrawn from the reserve because of the considerable risk of fire-fighting at night in broken country. They will return early tomorrow morning, but under present conditions there will be little they can do to save the major part of the reserve. The weather in Marlborough today was again warm with temperatures in the high 80’s and with high winds. The fire risk throughout the province is acute and will remain so until there is an appreciable fall of rain. The Forest Service says that at least an inch of rain is required to put the forest reserves out of immediate danger.
