BOWLS 18 Canterbury Players Unbeaten In Singles
(From Our Own Reporter) DUNEDIN, January 13. W. S. Roberts, of Fendalton, was the most prominent of the 18 Canterbury bowlers who survived the first round of the singles section without a loss at the national bowling championships here today. Fifty bowlers are still unbeaten, so Canterbury’s representation is a gpod one. Roberts beat the formidable T. T. Skoglund (Carlton) at the Andersons Bay green. This was a tight match all the way. The final score was 16-15.
C. L. A. Spearman, who was so unluckily eliminated from the pairs on the previous day, made amends with three fine displays today to remain unbeaten. Spearman beat F. Pedowski (Milton) 27-13 in his first game and then staged a tremendous finish to beat T- Smith (Thornton) 29-13 after holding a lea'’ of only 11-9 at the tenth en ’
In his last game Spearrr.n finished even more spectacularly against D. Hutchinson (Dunedin) who shares with E. H. Ravenwood (North-east Valley) the distinction of being the only man in the Dunedin centre to hold a five-star gold badge. After 14 ends Hutchinson led 14-5, but Spearman produced relentless scoring to win 20-17.
The Empire Games representative S. J. Snedden (Linwood) surprisingly lost to H. W. Thomas (Kaitangata), but he also scored two handsome wins over C. R. Collins (Riversdale) and H. Dass (Park, Timaru).
