Obituary MR R. EVANS
Mr R. Evans, a well-known Canterbury Rugby player and a member of the Canterbury team which beat the 1921 Springboks, died in Christchurch yesterday. Mr Evans first played football for the Northern club in the fifth grade and like many others from that club he later joined Merivale, when first class players like R. Hardy, E. Hasell, W. A. Ford and N. Carnegie made it one of the strongest clubs in New Zealand.
He and his great friend, “Rox” Hardy, made one of the most famous Canterbury club combinations. A five eighths, Mr Evans played 12 times for Canterbury and captained the province when it lost narrowly to Hawke’s Bay in a Ranfurly Shield match at Napier in 1923. Mr Evans was a good cricketer and played for the old Merivale club for several years.
