MR N. E. HUTCHINGS

Mr Norman Edwin Hutchings, a former chief administrative officer of the Ministry of Works, has died in Auckland. He was 60. Born in Whangarei, he entered the Public Works Department as a cadet in 1916. He transferred to Wellington in 1921 and five years later was appointed private secretary. He served as a secretary to six successive Ministers of Public Works and was appointed senior clerk to the head office of the department in 1937. He was promoted assistant-secretary for public wprks in 1938 and undersecretary in 1943.
