Government Collects Big Share
(IH.Z Press Association—Copyrights MELBOURNE, December 18. The Victorian State Government did well out of the 1958-59 night trotting season in Melbourne. It collected £234,939 from the 33 meetings conducted at the Royal .Show Grounds, while the Trotting Control Board's profit was £5142. The Government’s share was made up of:— £118.165: bookmakers' turnover tax. £76,873: 7 per cent, of win and place totalisator turnover, 4 per cent, of doubles and quinella' totalisator turnover and fractions and unclaimed dividends £39,901: entertainment tax.
Under the provisions of the Racing Act, the Treasury returned to the board £14.728 Horn the bookmakers’ turnover tax.
