INTRUDER IN GARAGE

Youth Captured After Chase

An intruder, who was disturbed in the Midway Service Station by the proprietor, Mr Charles McIver, in the early hours of Saturday morning, was later captured after a chase of a mile and a half by Detective D. M. Stewart in a patrol car. Mr Mclver, whose garage is at the corner of Cranford street and the Main North road, heard a noise in the building about 1 a.m. While his wife telephoned the police he alerted neighbours, Messrs Roy Chapman, Cyril Smith and Hunter Miller. Mr Mclver fired two shots from his shotgun near the garage building in an attempt to keep the intruder inside.

A figure climbed hurriedly through a 4ft high rear window and dashed towards a saloon car parked about 100 yards down the road. Four police cars had arrived at the service station. As the intruder drove off at high speed along the main road he was chased for a mile and a half before he was captured. Nothing was reported stolen from the service station. This is the fifth time Mr Mclver has caught intruders. Mr Mclver praised the efficiency of the police and the neighbours for the help they had given him. A youth was charged with breaking and entering the Midway Service Station in the Magistrate’s Court on Saturday morning, and was remanded in custody to December 17.
