New New Zealanders
When the Ist Battalion, New Zealand Regiment, reaches Lyttelton from Malaya on December 14 in the Captain Cook, several New Zealanders will “come home" for the first time. Among the 72 wives and 100 children in the ship are. 12 wives who married New Zealanders in Malaya and more than 20 children born to them. The wives, six Malayan and five British, are looking forward eagerly to their new life in New Zealand, says a report from Penang. Malaya, point of embarkation for the returning battalion. Two young Douglas firs in pots will be shipped to the Antarctic for use as Christmas trees. They will go to Scott and McMurdo Sound and are being given with the compliments of the New Zealand Forest Service.
Electra’s V isit Today When the Tasman Empire Airways turbo-prop Electra aircraft flies today to Christchurch (to give four local demonstration flights with local body members, businessmen and travel agents on board) it will bring the new Mayor of Auckland (Mr D. M. Robinson) and Mrs Robinson. Mr Robinson will call a conference soon on international airport questions affecting Auckland and he intends to spend his six hours here learning as much as possible about the Christchurch Airport and the attitude of the public to its support. The Electra will be operating from Harewood from about 9 a m. to 3 p.m.
Mobile X-Ray Unit A further 148 Hornby residents were X-rayed by the Health Department’s mobile unit yesterday, bringing the total for the week to 780. The unit will be stationed in the Square near the Government Tourist Department on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of next week.
Fishing Rivers The condition of fishing rivers at 9 a m. yesterday as reported by the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society was: Ashley, Waimakariri, Selwyn and Hurunui, all clear and fishable; the Halswell at Greenpark also clear and fishable subject to Catchment Board operations. The Waiau was discoloured and the Rakaia slightly so. At Arthur’s Pass there was a light northerly wind and 0.44 in of rain had fallen, during the last 24 hours. At Cui-' verden it was cloudy and calm, with north-west conditions, with little or no rain expected for the week-end North-west conditions with little or no rain during the week-end are forecast from Lake Coleridge.
