TO STUDY AT OXFORD
Rhodes Scholars Chosen
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 4. The Rhodes Scholarship Selection Committee which met today at Government House under the chairmanship of the Gov-ernor-General (Lord Cobham > has nominated Mr Robert John Aspden, of the University ot Auckland, and Mr James Julien Bennett Jack, of the University of Otago, for the two scholarships available to New Zealand this year. Mr Aspden, who is 21, was educated at Northcote College and the University of Auckland and hopes to complete his bachelor of engineering degree with honours this year. He represented his school at Rugby, cricket, athletics, and swimming, and this year played for the Counties colts representative Rugby team. At Oxford he proposes to study for a doctorate in civil engineering, specialising tn fluid mechanics or structures.
Mr Jack, who is 23, was educated at Hamilton High School and the University of Otago. In 1952, he gained a university junior scholarship, graduated bachelor of medical science in 1957 and master of medical science, with first class honours in physiology, in 1958. His sporting activities include swimming, athletics, tramping, and climbing and he is a member of the New Zealand Alpine Club. At Oxford, he proposes to continue with the clinical part of the medical course and to gain further research experience.
