Compost Heaps In Botanic Gardens
Sir, —When coming into Christchurch via Riccarton road, I am always surprised to see the heaps of compost, decaying leaves, etc., left in full view of everyone coming into our “City Beautiful.” If these cannot be put in a less conspicuous spot surely those who have made our parks and gardens so attractive could devise some means of obscuring them —rustic work or a live hedge, or some such thing. It is an eyesore to a beautiful entrance to the city.— Yours, etc., CIVIC-MINDED. Fendalton, November 25, 1959. [The Director of Reserves for the city council (Mr H. G. Gilpin) said that an alternative site had been prepared in the gardens for a rubbish dump and the composting of vegetation. It was anticipated that the existing heaps of compost and other material would be completely cleared away within a year, when the area would be landscaped and the adjoining pinetum extended.!
