GRAIN, SEEDS, PRODUCE
Small Seeds Still Quiet Overseas trading in small seeds is particularly quiet and, although a moderate volume of inquiries from United Kingdom merchants is being received, confirmations pre limited. No inquiry has been reported from the United States and Australian buying has been limited to small parcels of ryegrass. Compared with the prices quoted to growers a fortnight ago perennial ryegrass has slipped by 2s a bushel for mother quality and by Is 6d for permanent pasture. H.l ryegrass and other grades are unchanged. Merchants say that with a fall-ing-off in trading in perennial ryegrass the basic value has weakened, with lower quotations. Although white clover trading has been at a low ebb the basic level of values has not weakened. This has been attributed to the limited stocks of this commodity held by merchants in New Zealand. Prices to Growers The following prices to growers were announced yesterday by the Canterbury Grain, Seed and Produce Merchants’ Association:— Ryegrass.—Mother perennial,
20s 6d per bushel; p.p., 20s; uncertified, 15s 6d; mother H.l, 245; standard, 235. White Clover.—Mother 99/90, 3s Id per lb; p.p., 3s; 98/90, 3s; p.p., 2s lid. •
Cowgrass.—Certified, 2s per lb; uncertified, Is lOd. Browntop.—Certified, 3s per lb; uncertified, 2s 9d. Montgomery Red Clover.—Certified, 4s per lb; uncertified, 2s 9d. The president of the association (Mt Duncan MacFarlane), in announcing these prices, said they were those which could be justified for each variety of seed by the present level of trading.
