AID FROM N.A.T.O.
New Policy Urged (Rec. 11 p.m.) WASHINGTON, November 19. The Secretary-General of th* North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (Mr Paul-Henri Speak) today urged the 15 N.A.T.O. countries to extend their alliance into Africa and the Middle East to cope with the Communist economic offensive. A few hours earlier, the 150 N.A.T.O. Parliamentarians, meeting in Washington, had unanimously approved a resolution urging immediate establishment of a special economic commission to draft a concrete plan for more aid to the underdeveloped regions. 1 : 1 A group of resolutions proposed by a military committee were adopted, including one calling for a centralised system of aircraft detection and identification in Europe as “a matter of extreme urgency.” The other military resolution* proposed:
“Standardisation of supply lines, weapons, and equipment of the shield forces.” Consideration of the “necessity far revising the N.A.T.O. com-, manda with a view to making them strategically as effir cient as possible."
The series of economic resolutions was sponsored by a committee headed by Senator Jacob K. Javits, of Naw York. Senator Javits said ha foresaw partnership between the United States and other N.A.T.O. countries to carry the burden of supplying economic aid to underdevelopedcountries. “I am also convinced that
United States foreign aid is not likety to be increased in the immediate future. The hope for meeting the need now rests in partnership between the United States and the NA.T.O. countries,” he said.
