French Arms Budget Rise
PARIS, November IS. The 1960 French military budget being debated by the National Assembly today provides for a onemillion strong army, half of it stationed in Algeria, and development of an “atomic striking force.” Total estimated expenditure for the year is 1,650,000 million franca This is 61,000 million francs more than the proposed 1959 military budget and 16,000 million francs above the estimated actual expenditure this-year. The Armed Forces Minister, (Mr Pierre Guillaumat) said one of the main reasons for actual spending over estimates this year was the decision to keep 43,000 men in the army for longer than had been planned because of the Algerian campaign. The draft budget provides 42,000 million francs for atomic works, most of which is destined for development of France’s atomic bomb, the first test of which is expected before next spring.
