Electric Car Again
Manufacture of an electric car is being planned in Japan by a joint Japanese-American company. Known as the “Charles-About-Town,” the car will be powered by two electric motors driven by heavy duty 48-volt batteries. The car has a top speed of 55 miles an hour, and a range of 77 miles before recharging is necessary. The batteries can be recharged overnight by plugging them into any standard electric fitting. Sports Car The “Charles-About-Town” is a small sportscar with room in the back for two small children. The original designer and manufacturer, the Stinson Aircraft Tool and Engineering Company, of California, gave it the somewhat unusual name. The power source of the Charles is a 450-pound (204-kilo-gram) unit of selenium batteries that develops 48 volts. The electric motors, one at each rear wheel, can propel the automobile into a smooth, gearshift-free acceleration with unusual ease. The first models have been turned out in the United States, but full production of 2000 cars a month is not expected until some time next year. Production in Japan is expected in the next 12 months.
