WAIF BANISHED
JOHANNESBURG. Boesman Botha, a 10-year-old coloured waif who was being brought up in the Melville, Johannesburg, home of an elderly white woman, Mrs L. J. Koen, has been sent away—because of the neighbours’ hostility. Mrs Koen “adopted” Boesman three years ago, intending to educate him and bring him up as a Christian child—as she would one of her own children. But some neighbours objected to Boesman’s presence. Some weeks ago a storm of protest blew up about the boy. Recently Boesman’s belongings were packed and he was sent away. The reason was that Mrs Koen’s husband decided that for the time being “it is the best thing, in view of the attitude of some of the neighbours.”— Reuter.
