Many Women Riders Were Successful At Show

Women riders were well to the fore in the main events at the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association show, and they took their share of high awards. Competitors were warmly congratulated throughout all classes by the judge (Mr H. T. Simmons. Maraekakaho) for the high standard of their appearance. Looking particularly immaculate was Mrs B. G Rutherford FWaikari) when she won the ladies’ hack event on High Noon to add to her long list of trophies It was a happy decision for riders and spectators alike that the ladies’ hunter turn-out competition was revived after a lapse of about 25 years. .Older women among show visitors and horsewomen will recall the days when the well-known Canterbury riders. Mrs Marmaduke Bethell and the late Miss Isbel Rutherford, competed keenly against each other in this attractive event.

Miss Pamela Graham (Timaru) with her bowler at just the right angle, bridle and saddle correct and meticulously clean, and looking most attractive herself, deserved the special comments given by the judge when she won the event on Mr R. R. Jordan’s Saladin. Miss Graham, who used to show’ the well-known horse. Campbell, also won the title for the best-mannered hack yesterday on Saladin.

Miss Judith Kelly, of Methven who is not yet 20, was a young rider who did exceptionally well To /win the Nydfa Memorial Challenge Cup for dressage, the Gillanders Challenge Cup for open hunters and the ribbon for champion hunters is a fine achievement, and Miss Kelly took all three on Cavalier She must be a tireless worker to be able to train for these stiff events while she is a student at the Christchurch Teachers’ College

Family Success A family success was recorded by Mr and Mrs D. C. Gould. Mrs Gould, who hunts with Cherrywood regularly twice a week right through the winter, won the wire jump on her hunter and Mi Gould won the champion hack with his mare Rosewood. Miss Mary Hazlett, who is a regular visitor at the Show, bringing her horses up from Invercargill, won the heavy-weight hunter event with Tide, adding to her long list of show prizes. Miss Violet Nichols (Oamaru) won many prizes with her lovely ponies, both ridden and led, which she has bred herself from her mares and - stallion imported from England from the stud of the, late Lady Wentworth Through the importation of fine breeding stock by Miss Nichols and other keen horsewomen, the standard of ponies in Canterbury is very high.

A popular win was that of Miss Noeline Darling of Oamaru on her small trotting horse Remem ber in the puissance competition. Competing against Mr E. Upritchard on Land Rover in the final, Miss Darling completed the course with one fence knocked over while her opponent downed two.

Miss J. Glover, a young Canterbury rider, won the award for the best lady rider over fences on Mr I. Ritchie’s Limelight, the judge (Mr B. Burke, Gisborne) being particularly impressed with her riding. Spectators in the crowded stands, and seated and standing

thickly round the pafade and judging ring, especially enjoyed the F.E.I. jumping events, which were more numerous this year. With more colour and variety in fences and courses laymen found these events of great interest and the marking system easy to follow.
