JUDGING BEGINS AT KENNEL CLUB’S SHOW

Fifty yards away from the dog pavilion at the Show Grounds yesterday it sounded as though a mass dog fight was going on inside, but in the hall the Canterbury Kennel Club had the situation well under control with its usual show-time orderliness.

Dogs sat. slept or barked in their side-by-side pens, waiting patiently for their turn in the show ring, or relaxed after being judged. Peeping uncertainly through the bars of a pen was a miniature white poodle with a bow in her hair, looking like a young girl at her first grown-up party. Just by her cage a notice told exhibitors: “In this class winners must be under 11 inches.” A little further on a wirehaired dachshund was hob-nob-bing with some of his smoothcoated friends of the same breed. A Kennel Club official said dachshunds were rapidly becoming the most popular pet dog. “Their short hair means that they are easy to keep clean,” he said. In the next row of pens Pekinese sat smugly in their cages behind award cards. Just below them springer spaniels lay quietly. Along the row a black and tan miniature terrier, that turns the' scale at just 51b, was relaxing after another win. Chihuahuas Right next door a chihuahua was sleeping quietly on a bright blue cushion, his ears twitching once in a while as he'dreamed doggy dreams. The puppy’s owner, Miss Margaret Mclntyre, looked happily on as it slept oblivious of a huge bone and a silver prize tankard in 'the pen. The chihuahua (pronounced she-wa-wa)—claimed to be the smallest dog in the world—is on show in Christchurch for the first time.

Nearby a pug sat sad-eyed in his tiny cage, not even cheered by three big packs of dog biscuits that were taking up nearly as much room as he was.

The Kennel Club man said the pug had been a popular breed about 40 years ago, and was again becoming very popular. Sitting in majestic solitude was a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel just along the row from a saucy-faced Pomeranian.

A sudden cry came from a man in a green felt hat: “Look -—there’s a little Sydney silky.” Everybody near enough to hear, stopped to look at the, urchinfaced Australian silky terriers. In the row below, the Welsh Corgis, whose popularity the Kennel Club’s man said was on the wane these days,, ignored the commotion.

A little further on a German sheepdog shared its pen with a tiny baby. Dog and baby were no trouble to each other; they were sleeping soundly.

Judge From Sydney This year’s dog show judge of all breeds is Mr W. Bruce, of Sydney, who has judged at the Royal Shows in Sydney and Melbourne. He judged in Christchurch last at the Centennial showv

Mr Bruce became judge for this show quite unexpectedly. “A judge was coming from Melbourne, but was taken ill. As I happened to be on holiday in New Zealand I was invited,” he said.

He said the dog show was “quite representative and the standard of breeds quite good. Some of the breeds—the Corgis, poodles and non-sporting dogs are well-represented.” Mr Bruce said the winners were of high standard. He praised the Kennel Club facilities. “The show is generally well appointed. The ring arrangements and facilities for assembly and parading are first class,” he said.
