Scanlan Fined £5O
(New Zealand Press Association) TIMARU, October 4. The Wellington professional boxer, T. Scanlan, was fined £5O for negligence, his licence to be suspended until such time as the fine is paid, at a meeting of the New Zealand Boxing Association in Timaru this evening. After a long discussion in committee, the chairman of the New Zealand Boxing Council issued the following statement: "Scanlan arranged to meet his trainer at the Otahuhu gymnasium, but went instead to another gymnasium, where he sparred with faulty equipment and injured his hands. He was at the time under contract to fight for the Wellington Boxing Association. “His manager sent word through the New Zealand Press Association that the fight with G. Leahy would be postponed, without consulting the Wellington association. Wellington lost about £4OO through expenses it had incurred.” This is the largest monetary penalty that has been imposed on a boxer in New Zealand.
