INTER-SERVICES TOURNAMENT
Army Competitors Win In Five Weights (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, October 4. The finals of the inter-services’ boxing tournament, held at Auckland on Saturday night, resulted in a win for Army. Army, with five wins, was followed by the previous holder. Navy, three wins, and Air Force, one win. An Auckland provincial champion. Ck. I. McGrory (Navy), showing speed and good footwork, punched and covered will to defeat L.M. E. Greer (Navy), in one of the best bouts of the evening, and was rewarded with the trophy for the most scientific boxer. Sergeant Lyons (Army) won his third heavy-weight championship with a points win over Sig. Thomas (Navy). Lyons won the title in 1954 and 1957. Results:— Bantam-weight: L.D.A. J. Hartigan (Navy), unopposed. Feather-weight: A.B. B. Miller (Navy) beat L.M. E. Greer (Navy) on points. Light-weight: Ck. T. McGrory (Navy) beat L.M. E. Greer (Navy) on points. Light welter-weight: Pte. Naivalu (Army) beat I.AC. Holder (Air) by a technical kno«.k-out. Light middle-weight: Pte. F. Maka (Army) beat Wtd. Lena (Navy) by a knockout. Middle-weight: Cfn. Sua (Army) beat L.A.C. Hunter (Air) by a knockout. Light heavy-weight: Pte. Komaitai (Army) beat Spr. Raumati (Army) by a technical knockout. Heavy-weight: Sgt. Lyons (Army) beat Sig. Thomas (Navy) on points. Most scientific boxer: Ck. T. McGrory (Navy). Bert loser: Cpl. Morgan (Air).
