NEW YORK EXPLOSION
Accident With Dynamite <N.Z Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11 p.m.) - NEW YORK, September 24. A dynamite explosion rocked apartment buildings on Riverside Drive, New York yesterday, shattering broken glass and debris over an entire city block. Ten persons were injured and taken to hospitals and an undetermined number of others were cut by flying glass. The explosion occurred when a professional dynamite blaster burned four sticks of dynamite to get rid of them. But instead of merely burning, the dynamite exploded with a terrific roar. The blast occurred in an excavation site in front of a 12-storey building. It rocked pedestrians and construction workers off their feet and broke windows in nearby buildings. The area was littered with debris. A heavy cloud of smoke rose over the neighbourhood when the blast occurred.
Police said Giuseppe Mignenalll, aged 61, a professional blaster, touched off the explosion. They said burning dynamite was an unsafe but not unusual method of disposing of excess dynamite. Fire authorities said, however, that the burning method was illegal in New York city. Police said Mignenalll would be charged with malicious mischief, felonious assault and unlawful use of dynamite
